Frequently Asked Questions
Where should mechanical remedial wall ties be installed?
Mechanical wall ties should be fixed into the centre of the brick, not into the mortar joint. The surrounding masonry must be sound and capable of providing adequate pull-out resistance.
What if the wall is rendered or pebble-dashed?
If the property is rendered or pebble-dashed and the mortar joints are not visible, resin-bonded wall ties are often the preferred solution. Resin systems are also recommended where there are concerns about masonry condition or consistency.
What grade of stainless steel wall tie should be used?
Grade 304 (A2) stainless steel wall ties are supplied as standard and are suitable for most environments.
For coastal, marine, or heavily polluted areas, Grade 316 (A4) stainless steel is recommended for improved corrosion resistance.
All products can be upgraded to A4 grade on request.
How deep should remedial wall ties be installed?
Helical mechanical wall ties must achieve a minimum embedment of 70mm into the inner (load-bearing) leaf.
Typical pilot hole diameters are 5–6mm, depending on the tie type and substrate.
Should the substrate be tested before installation?
Yes. We recommend testing the strength of the masonry substrate before installation to confirm suitability and to determine the correct drill size and fixing method.
Do existing wall ties need to be removed?
Yes. Existing wall ties that are being replaced should either be removed or isolated to prevent ongoing corrosion or structural issues.
